چکیده

We have observed three Type 2 radio loud active galactic nuclei using the VLBA at five frequencies between 1.6 GHz and 15 GHz, in a search for the free-free absorption cutoff predicted by some models for optically-obscuring dusty molecular tori. We find no evidence for sharp cutoffs toward low frequencies in any of the sources. However, one source, OW637, has VLBI components which are steeply falling toward high frequencies (Sν ∝ ν ). A search for molecular absorption in the tori of active galactic nuclei

We describe a search for molecular absorption at millimetre wavelengths associated with dusty molecular tori in active galactic nuclei (AGN). The sample observed consists of 11 flat-spectrum radio sources known to have red optical to infra-red colours plus two steep-spectrum narrow-line radio galaxies. Spectra of the sources were obtained in the 3-, 2-and 1.3-millimetre bands at frequencies cor...

Clumpy tori around active galactic nuclei

We discuss the question whether the matter in dusty tori around active galactic nuclei has a smooth or a clumpy structure. Nenkova, Ivezic & Elitzur (2002) have argued that the lack of emission feature in the SEDs of type 1 AGN galaxies combined with a clear absorption feature in type 2 AGN can be explained if the circumnuclear dust is distributed in discrete clumps. Our aim is to verify this. ...

Dusty Tori of Seyfert Nuclei

Dusty tori around active galactic nuclei (AGNs) play an important role in the classification of Seyfert galaxies. (Antonucci & Miller 1985; see also Antonucci 1993 for a review). Seyfert galaxies observed from a face-on view of the torus are recognized as type 1 Seyferts (S1s) while those observed from an edge-on view are recognized as type 2 Seyferts (S2s). Therefore, physical properties of du...

The 3 . 4 micron absorption feature towards three obscured active galactic nuclei

The results of 3–4 μm spectroscopy towards the nuclei of NGC 3094, NGC 7172, and NGC 7479 are reported. In ground-based 8–13 μm spectra, all the sources have strong absorption-like features at ∼10 μm, but they do not have detectable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features. The 3.4 μm carbonaceous dust absorption features are detected towards all nuclei. NGC 3094 shows a detectab...

The Ionization Fraction in the Obscuring ‘Torus’ of an Active Galactic Nucleus

The LINER galaxy NGC 2639 contains a water vapor megamaser, suggesting the presence of an edge-on nuclear accretion disk or torus. This galaxy is thus a good candidate for revealing absorption by the torus of any compact nuclear continuum emission. In this paper, we report VLBA radio maps at three frequencies and an ASCA X-ray spectrum obtained to search for free-free and photoelectric absorpti...
